Michael Schenker - Temple of Rock Live in Europe (DVD and CD)

Ever since Michael Schenker made his triumphant return to form, with the Temple of Rock album, he has been on fire.  Though Michael has has some rough times over the years, it seems like the hard times are behind him, because he is once again focused, giving his fans the best music and performances that he can.  

Temple of Rock, and the tour following the release, solidified the return of Michael Schenker, and fans around the world welcomed him back into the spotlight.  Michael's material has been hit or miss over the past few years, but with Temple, it seemed like all the stars aligned and he was back.  Thanks to the folks at MVD Entertainment, now you can witness with your eyes and ears how awesome Michael and Co. are live, with the recent release of Temple of Rock (Live in Europe).  This show has been released in (3) forms, DVD, BluRay and a deluxe combo with BluRay, a bonus DVD and a 2 CD's of the performance.  Pretty Sweet eh?

This live compilation shows Michael and his band in fine form.  The DVD has a complete show from Tilburg as well as an abbreviated set from the High Voltage Festival.  As a bonus, the featured band in the full show in Tilburg features ex-Scorpions Herman Rarebell (drums) and Francis Buchholz (bass). Ex-Rainbow vocalist Doogie White, handles the majority of the vocal duties, with he exception of a cameo by vocalist Michael Voss, on a track from the Temple of Rock record.  Voss handles the majority vocals on the High Voltage footage.  

Temple of Rock Live in Europe, is an excellent show.   It doesn't matter if you get it on CD or DVD, because the both rock.   I would highly recommend both.  Both shows included on the DVD, are spot on and look and sound great.  I have to say, I think Michael needs to make Voss his permanent vocalist, because the guy smokes as a singer, and isn't too bad with an axe either.  This was non stop fun to watch and listen to.  A solid effort by a guitar great.

Bottom Line: Michael and Co. in fine form.  A very enjoyable concert to watch and to listen to.  The band are in fine form.  A definite must for Schenker fans.

-Ragman will keep this one close for awhile.

The Yardbirds - Making Tracks

The Yardbirds have spawned some of the greatest guitarists of our time.  It is hard to believe that Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck all dawned the stage as a Yardbird, at one time or another.  Well it has been many a year since these guys have played with The Birds, but uh..., they've all been a little busy over the past 5 decades. Even though the guitar heroes have been gone for some time, drummer Jim McCarty and rhythm guitarist Chris Deja have been back at it, since their reunion in 1992.  The current line up wasn't solidified until 2009, but has been going strong ever since.  

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the band, and even though The Yardbirds only have 2 original members, they still have found a way to maintain an audience and rock a venue.  Making Tracks is a compilation of live shows, as well as a documentary from the band from their 2010 - 2012 tour.   The show is shot well and the audio and is spot on.  My only complaint is that you loose some continuity when the band switches from different performances.  It became a little distracting.

I was never really a huge Yardbirds fan, at least I thought, until I saw the video.  This band authored so many songs I had heard before, but not from them, but from other artists.  I gotta say, I had no idea that Dazed and Confused was a Yardbirds song, before it way a Zeppelin tune.  This band has been well covered over the years.  The performance on this DVD was crisp and entertaining.  I really dug this video.  Even though Page, Beck and Clapton are absent, it still doesn't take away from the solid performance, from the current line up.  It would have been cool to see one of those guys do a cameo, but it didn't really matter, because of the solid performance.

Bottom Line: If you're a purist, this one may take some time to get through, due to the fact that the only original members are the drummer and rythim guitarist.  If you're just looking for some coll bluesy classic rock done well, then this is your DVD.

Kingcrow - In Crescendo

Take your favorite progmetal bands from the 90s, mix into a stew and get Kingcrow.Man, Italy's really becoming the new place for interesting metal bands. Kingcrow started out as more of a straightahead metal band in the late 90s, but has since expanded to incorporate the more dramatic and reflective moods of progressive bands like Opeth or Dream Theater. Their previous release Timetropia has been hailed as a classic rock opera, being compared favorably to the likes of Tommy or Operation Mindcrime. And their 2010 effort Phlegethon received many accolades for its progressive stylings.

With In Crescendo, they continue their exploration of complex, atmospheric yet melodic music - that will sound rather familiar to fans of the aforementioned stalwarts of the genre - with moments of brilliance throughout. Right Before will remind you of Dream Theater's Awake-era stuff, while This Ain't Another Love Song has a great Enchant vibe, while Morning Rain is a great tune in the vein of vintage Queensrÿche, and so on throughout the album in a musical parade of progressive bands [mostly from the 90s].

Now the only problem (if you even want to call it that) that I run into is that when you think about it, while this is great music from an obviously talented band, it's also clearly, heavily, influenced by the bands they so closely resemble. That is to say that some people might wonder how original Kingcrow's music is. And while I can see their point, I am not in that camp. What I see is an established band that became inspired by a style and dived headfirst into it. And their output is really good, from the music to the impressive production - seriously, the mix on this album is about perfect, proving that it should be possible for every instrument to be heard clearly without the whole thing becoming muddy.

The Bottom Line: Fans of 90s progmetal bands will find much to like in Kingcrow's latest album. This is a talented group of artists with a good sense of melody and dynamics that some of those other prog bands have forgotten in the last 20 years...

Rhyme - The Seed And The Sewage

Them Southern boys sure know to rock things in - *spit take* Milan?!Italy's not the first place us Americans think of when considering modern metal bands. It's not because they don't have plenty of great bands coming out of that Mediterranean locale. For me, I imagine it has something to do with the phenomenon of singers often losing their accent when they sing in English. I don't know if that's just how they learned or what, but whether by choice or some natural transmogrification, it happens - as in the case of Milan's Rhyme. This is neither good or bad, mind you, I'm simply saying you may come to find out that great new band you found on Spotify may not be as American as they sound.

Their second album, The Seed And The Sewage, is a very approachable record in the vein of bands like Nickelback or even Black Stone Cherry. It's straightahead modern metal with a Southern slant which makes for a pretty agreeable formula - especially to us Americans. Vocalist Gabriele Gozzi has a great voice for this kind of music; a loud, powerful rebel yell that rides on the melodic crunch of Matteo Magni's guitars. Thankfully, there's a good clean mix for the listener to enjoy these radio friendly tunes without having to strain through the kind of muddy production that often ruins otherwise enjoyable bands.

The more I listen to it, the more it kinda sounds like a lost Winger album with songs that may not stick in your head for very long but are nonetheless throughly enjoyable every time you hear them.

The Bottom Line: Straightahead metal music with a Southern swagger from the Mediterranean? Yup, that's exactly what you get with Rhyme's sophomore release. Somebody pour me a drink and turn it up!
