Podcast #113: Trunk

Say what you will about Jaz, but the man's a snappy dresser.Genghis & Ragman discuss the small but significant empire that metal maven Eddie Trunk has built for himself since his days as an AR rep.  While his radio work has done much for metal, it seems like his TV work is a little too commercial (for lack of a better word) for Genghis' liking.  As for Jim and Don, they're as important as talk show sidekicks have always been... Next the boys rounded up legendary vocalist, Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke), for a one on one.  Jaz discusses the reunion of the original line up as well as their latest release, Absolute Dissent.

Like you said any Metal show is better than nothing and you see how popular it is because its up to an hour show. But yes it could be so much better. I like the fact Eddie is a slob like the rest of us older MetalHeads. But the other guys do look so forced and it hurts the flow. Jamison looks like he is at the dentist gettig ready to have his teeth pulled. Also I don't car if the questions are softballs just do an interview and stop all the other crap. I like stump the trunk and while the questions are a certain era its because thats who Eddie is. Bob of Shockwaves podcast had Martin Popoff on and he made a good reference to the fact why he won't do a "2000's" metal book as he is a certain age and doesn't follow all the newer bands. So goes for Eddie I guess. I would also like if they played some new material of the artist when they are on. Like the guest guitar player...again bringing attention to the artist.

Yeah, that's something I always wanted to do, have our interviewee (like George Lynch, for instance) talk with us with his guitar and play licks and stuff while we talk - not like a soundtrack, but if he referenced a song like "So, like the way I do that thing in Mr. Scary (plays the lick)...", but I guess that would come off dorky. If I could play worth a crap, I'd play during the show myself just to illustrate stuff when we're talking about it. I just think it would add something. Too bad we don't know a local bad-ass guitarist who would sit in on the shows with us...

As for the whole "everything they talk about is old metal" thing, I totally understand as an older metalhead that you talk about what you know. I'm sure Eddie listens to newer stuff, like we do, but we're more familiar with and highly respect the old stuff that made metal what it is today. Not that there's anything wrong with highlighting new stuff, that's why I'm trying to listen to a lot more new artists so I can see what's out there and help promote it like Ragman does.

Sounds like a good topic for a show! Old metal vs new metal, are they really that different? What bands recall the sounds of old metal bands while bringing something new to the table? What old bands are still remaining relevant without completely changing their style? Are there any true successors to the old guard, like Municipal Waste taking the baton from Testament, and so forth...

- Genghis might have to go listen to some Testament now...(it's so hard to quit!)

Though the latest Marist Poll has shown that RTR episodes with John singing raised your ratings. Mel is still pissed.
