The Van Halen DVD you were watching was filmed in Sydney for what was going to be part of an MTV special or something like that, however it never made it. It was a great show. I saw them 3 times of that tour. They announced prior that there would be lots of cameras and that the lighting would not be the same as normal as a result of them trying to get better footage.
At that time I believe Eddie was sober. They let Gary Cherone pick the set list and I remember Eddie being pleased they could play some of the Roth era tunes that they hadnt played for years under Hagar.
There is one point in the concert where Cherone was jumping around out in the crowd and he did a jump from one section of seating to another and nearly fucked up and barely made it (he could have slammed into the concrete wall under a row of seats without the elevation he got).
Hey, GD, thanks for the info. Man, it sounds like you Aussies get a lot of great shows down there. Wish we could be so lucky in Houston. This town's notorious for getting passed up by a lot of bands that naturally tend to favor the West and East coasts. Being Southeast Texas on the Gulf Coast with a predominately Hispanic demographic, I guess it's not too surprising that we're not exactly a hotbed of metal - which makes you wonder why San Antonio is.
I know I kind of belabored the point, but I really had high hopes for Gary Cherone and Van Halen. It's such a shame they never made it work. But in the end it's all up to Eddie I reckon. If he ain't down with it, it ain't happening. Period.
Hope you dig the show. We're finally in a position to start trying newer stuff. I'm working on becoming more knowledgeable about the beer we're drinking, getting very close to being able to consistently put out some sort of video blog like the erstwhile Metal Minute, and just generally improving our sound quality and turnaround time.
HORNS UP!
